Don't mess with Sam Gentile
Sam Gentile dominates the Mad Mexican

Sam Gentile is many things to many people - software developer, technical blogger, competent presenter, and thanks to his participation on a recent comment thread, SUPERHUMAN ASSKICKER.  Sam posts literally one sentence and then D'Arcy Lussier folds like a cheap house of cards!  "Please don't hurt me Sam!!  I'm sorry I said anything, can I wash your car?"  *Sheesh*.  Anyone who thought the Mad Mexican was "one tough hombre" has had their illusions shattered.  I don't know whether it's the hours of running, the weight-lifting, or the steroid abuse, but I believe that as a result of this one-sided affair we can safely declare Sam Gentile to be the white Shaft of the software development industry.

When he's not training to be a UFC cage fighter, Sam also occasionally posts some influential technical articles.  "I alone am responsible for my technical growth" has been a big influence on me.   This post and the post that inspired it ("Who Is Responsible for your Career?", from the late Douglas Reilly) date back to 2003, but their advice is timeless; I've read and re-read both of the posts several times.

Those of you who have two functioning eyes are likely confused by my recommending an article by Sam.  I can hear the question now: "But Justice, Sam is lacking hair.  Can he *really* be trusted?"  Come on, guys!  Obviously in this case, the answer is still absolutely not.  Sam Gentile is obviously a cunning and devious man.  However, as evidenced by the previous comment activity, he is also a SCARY MAN.  I sure don't want to mess with him!

There are certainly a lot of details like that to take into consideration. That is a great point to bring up. I offer the thoughts above as general inspiration but clearly there are questions like the one you bring up where the most important thing will be working in honest good faith. I don?t know if best practices have emerged around things like that, but I am sure that your job is clearly identified as a fair game.
