I live to inform Episode I - Is Sebastian a lobster or crab?

Q: Is Sebastian from the Little Mermaid a crab or a lobster?

The answer here comes from Disney Online Services:

A: Sebastian is a crab.

And just like that, you are now smarter than you were 5 seconds ago!

The bigger question - why is this considered an important question for Disney Online?

If you look closely, Sebastian is in fact the rarely seen crab /lobster hybrid, otherwise known as the crabster. Sebastian doesn't have the typical tail of a lobster, he has what more closely resembles a crab shell. However, if you look at his claws, they are more closely resemble those of the lobster. Note the larger upper claws more indicative of those of a lobster.

Hence, Sebastian is neither a crab nor a lobster, he is a crabster.

Not unlike the trans-sexual performers in Thailand, I think Sebastian is a trans-species lobster. I mean, he really is a lobster with an identity crisis who removed his "tail" in order to be more like a crab. He probably takes crab-hormones too, but his large lobstery claws and protruding head give him away as a lobster.

transgender thais aside, i think he clearly is a crab taking lobster hormones, as opposed to vice versa. crab hormones would not make a fully intact tail disappear, but enlarging crab claws to lobster-like proportions is definitely feasible. Sebastian's carapace is clearly that of a crab's, so there you have it.

This is a common mistake; Sebastian is not a Crab he is a Krab, just like Mr. Krabs who you may know as Sponge Bob's boss. Mr. Krabs also has larger upper claws yet no lobster tail which are the distinctive characteristics of Krabs.

I have the video of Little Mermaid from when it first was released, and on the back where it gives you an overview of the film, it clearly states Sebastian is a crab. Also in the film when the chef is going to cook Sebastian he says he is a "succulent crab". After all, he is obviously not supposed to resemble a real crab/lobster. If he was, then he wouldn't talk!!

I still maintain that Sebastian is actually some mutated talking crab/lobster resulting from some sort of radioactive accident. Of course, I also think that the Little Mermaid is a post-apocalyptic story of life after most of the earth has been flooded over...

HAHAHAHA...I cant believe this. This is too funny. My girl and I had the biggest debate (Mass-Debate) about this particular subject. It almost broke us up from a 5 year long relationship...ok not really. But its been a couple weeks and I've stayed true to the idea that good old Seb was a Lobster and she, being a Little Mermaid fan and all, was so adamant that he was a Crab. Cut an already long story short she just called me to look it up online and I came across this lot. And well, I dont care what Disney Online Services has to say "Sebastian The Crab is in fact a Lobster". Still have to give her Five Bloody Bucks...Dammit!!!

omg. no way. me and my friends were arguing about this at school today. && we came to the conclusion that it was a "crabster" because it looked like both a crab and a lobster. && then i came on this site. and people were all like "he's a crabster" && i was like "OH SNAP! WE WERE RIGHT!"

ok you all are stupid......he is a crab! Not a lobster. Who ever thinks he's a lobster is stupid. Look at the way he walk in the movie, and his shell. DOes he have a tail...NO. What about his claws? SO they're bigger...DUH he's a cartoon...

If you ask anyone this question when there is no picture of Sebastian about they will all say lobster... because he is perceived to be more like a lobster than a crab, but on closer inspection it seems that yes he does have some crablike features.

I am glad that I found this site. Me and my wife just had a huge debate over whether he was a lobster or a crab. She has watched the movie so many times she wore out the vhs version twice, and she was adamant that he was a crab, but I remembered those lobster like features. I am elated to hear the crabster theory. This means that while she may be right, I'm not wrong either. lol
