Edmonton may be dead, but the crime rate sure isn't
Edmonton may not be the "City of Champions" anymore, but it can still be proud that it is #1 at *something*, and that something is the
#1 homicide rate in Canada
. I know this is going to make me sound like a bit like a crotchety old man despite being neither old nor crotchety, but what is up with the massively increased crime rate in our city? I can't think of many other cities that feature a bus stabbing *and* a near dismemberment happening 5-10 blocks from each other *on the same night*. My friend Steve says that Vancouver would be just like this. I beg to differ:
Search on Google News for "Edmonton Bus Stabbing"
: Tons of results
Search on Google News for "Vancouver Bus Stabbing"
: *One* result - and it's talking about the bus stabbings in
*Edmonton*
.
What the heck is wrong with our city? I mean, we're not such a depraved city that
we attack each other with meat cleavers
, but being called "Canada's Murder Capital" is certainly getting there...
Edmontonians? What do you think is the cause?

I think the primary cause is the bus. I mean, who even rides the bus?! I don't know what is up with the mighty 'Ton these days but its NASCAR roots are starting to be more evident. Who fights over cold medicine?! Anyways, I think most of those fights are happening in areas of the city I have never been before. I'm pretty sure the individuals that enjoy gorging on ''all you can eat tripe buffets'' and find pro-wrestling intellectually stimulating are most likely involved.
The lesson of that news story - don't ride the bus. Don't ride it, unless you want to end up like the members of Strike Force Moturi; also, don't ride it because it sucks.

Interesting thought, Victor. ;)
Actually, this bus fight happened at 7 AM right on Jasper Ave in front of the Boston Pizza. That's what I find most frightening about it!
Although you are right about the proletariat chariot, I think...

I think if I had to live in Edmonton again, I'd be a lot more violent as well. ;)

2 murders in one night? We have that almost every minute in Johannesburg - South Africa.

I grew up on the Miramichi in New Brunswick ... in the late 80s we had the highest per capita murder rate in North America for one year. Anyone remember Allen Legere?

Well Jason, with respect to Miramichi
But with population of 2 people in Miramichi, then murder of one person will make it the highest rate of murder per capita in the world

Terry - I feel your pain. Thankfully it is less violent in Calgary where everyone does nothing but ride steers all day!
Baldy - that's crazy. Seriously, how does one feel safe there?
Jason and anonymous - LOL!! Must make it easy to catch the guy who did the homicide...

Justice - the oil boom hadn't hit out west so the Maritimes hadn't become ghost towns yet with everyone moving out there for work. So there were more than two people in my town at the time ... might not be able to say that for much longer though.
Now if you'll excuse me, I want to enjoy my leisurely 10 min commute to the office.
