I Wish These People Updated More Than Once a Year

This guy doesn't look a day over 20!  Maybe it's the ballcap

Today is my good friend Donald Belcham's birthday (it's actually also my father's birthday, but I think he'd prefer to have as little to do publicly with this blog as possible).   I want to mention that sincerely I think Donald is an amazing dude, and someone who I have immense respect for both personally and professionally - he was the first .NET MVP in Edmonton Alberta, and no one is more deserving of that honor in this city.  He's an inspiration to software developers everywhere, but if you are lucky enough to have him as a friend there is none better.

To celebrate Donald's 7 decades of software development mastery I've decided to share one of my favorite stories about Donald, one that no one has heard until now.

I hung with Donald, Steve Rockarts, Kyle Baley and some others at DevTeach in Vancouver this last year and Donald got into a bit of a debate with a 5 year old child walking in the Sheraton Wall Centre with his 27 year old mother when we went to get breakfast.  It was clear the child Donald was talking to (let's call him a "Tiny Tot") was just out of his league, but he was doing his best to hold his own in this debate (I think it was about whether or not the kid wanted to give Donald the rest of his ice cream).

The conversation started to get a little edgy, and Donald decided he wanted to move on to other topics, so he rapid-fired all the reasons why he thought the way he did about the thing he was talking about. *THEN* he kicked the kid SQUARE IN THE NUTS, grabbed his mom, french kissed her and then leaned over and yelled "I'M YOUR DAD!!!" at the crumpled mass of child on the floor. Short, concise, right between the legs.  It was overwhelming. A complete savant spasm that no one was ready for. It was a clear statement: “I’ve had fun, I’m done”.

The only response the child could give was a whimper before he curled up in the fetal position and rocked himself back and forth.

Donald then lays out, what to me, is pure Belcham:

That’s Prison Life Baby

The room erupted with spilled drinks and laughter, tears and people holding their sides from laughing. It was at that time that I decided never to debate Donald in anything, ever, especially if I had a child of my own!!

I invite you all to share your own treasured Donald memories on your blog today to commemorate this occasion!!

Sounds to me like the kid totally had it coming...

Dude, Donald is *your* dad! Think about it...

Hmmm, the story I heard was that it was the kid who kicked Don in the 'nads. But I wasn't there, so what do I know.

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

Funny story, the day before DevTeach, we went wandering the streets of Vancouver in search of a Jersey for Donald's favorite team, the Nanaimo Sheep Shaggers. D'Arcy "there's no such thing as *absolute* zero" Lussier was with us and the two of them were doing this duellin' MapQuest thing on their phones to find what is essentially the biggest building in all of British Columbia. A half hour into our journey, they both stop to check their progress. After a couple of minutes, they both look at each other, turn their phones 180 degrees, then turn around and start walking the other way.

When we arrive at the stadium (which I'll call the Thunderdome but probably not for the reasons you're thinking), we do *almost* a complete pass around the periphery looking for an entrance. I point at a couple of people walking in the door and say, "That must be it. Look. They're opening the door and going inside. And they're walking out with Jerseys" Donald ponders this for a minute and says, "Nah, it can't be. Let's just head back to the hotel."

I learned much about Donald's style of leadership, his technical acumen, and most importantly, his acute sense of direction that day. Happy Birthday, Dude!

Kyle left out the part about how we had to call a cab to get back to the hotel because everyone who walked by thoguht he was a shivering BC homeless guy and kept throwing their sweaters and jackets at us out of guilt.

You know, this reminds me: did we ever post about the homeless guy talking about HTML and PHP?? It seems like a crime we never actually mentioned this anywhere...

You jest. Some of those were flannel.

My bestest Donald story was the night of the DevTeach massacre. I can't remember the day, but oh the night. There we were, staggering along the streets of Vancouver. Surprisingly stumbling upon a Linux homeless guy who claimed to own more domains than me. It was Donald in his glory as we drank the night away, arriving at an Earls later in the eve. With Donald in his "I'm a hard-ass who can drink even Britney Spears under the table" attitude, he proceeded to spew little squirts of Belcham all over Greg Youngs pizza. After that I believe he retired to the bathroom, did some spewing, and somehow made it back to his hotel room unscathed only to return the next morning to give a kick-ass presentation to all the little developers. What a man.
